How to read a digital clock — 3 easy steps

  1. Look left of the colon. That number is the hour.
  2. Look right of the colon. That number is the minutes.
  3. Say them together: “three twenty-five”, or “twenty-five past three”.

Fox trick: the colon is a fence. Hours live on one side, minutes live on the other.

Writing the time

Write the hour, a colon, then two digits for the minutes. Five past nine is 9:05.

Try it!

Look at a digital clock at home. Say the hour, then the minutes. Then find the same time on an analogue clock.
