How to read half past — 3 easy steps

  1. Look at the blue hand. Is it pointing straight down at 6? That’s half past!
  2. Look at the red hand. It’s sitting halfway between two numbers.
  3. Use the Room Trick: say the smaller number. The red hand hasn’t reached the next room yet!

Fox trick: the blue hand has walked half of the way round the clock, so it’s half past!

On a digital clock

Half past always ends in :30, like 3:30 or 8:30.

Try it!

Blue hand down at 6 and red hand between 3 and 4? It’s still in room 3, so it’s “half past three” — 3:30.
